About Greenwoods Conservation Area

Greenwoods Conservation Area spans a richly forested region in western Oregon, characterized by dense stands of Douglas fir, western hemlock, and lush understory vegetation. The area encompasses a mix of old-growth and second-growth forests, supporting a wide variety of wildlife including black bears, deer, and numerous bird species such as pileated woodpeckers and northern spotted owls. The conservation area preserves critical waterways and wetlands that feed into nearby river systems, maintaining natural hydrology and fish habitats. Historically, the region was used by Native American tribes for hunting and gathering, and remnants of early logging activity remain visible along some trails. Visitors to Greenwoods can enjoy hiking on over 30 miles of multi-use trails that wind through moss-draped forests and alongside pristine creeks. Several scenic viewpoints offer expansive vistas of the surrounding valleys and mountains. The area is also prized for recreational fishing, bird watching, and mountain biking. Notable landmarks include the Greenwoods Falls, a 40-foot waterfall accessible via a moderate trail, and the historic Ranger Station turned interpretive center. The conservation area appeals to outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate quiet natural settings, opportunities for wildlife observation, and well-maintained trail networks away from heavy crowds.
